U.S. Consumer Sentiment Tops Estimates

An index of U.S. consumers' attitudes rose to its highest level since January 2015, according to figures released Friday.

The University of Michigan's Index of Consumer Sentiment hit 98 in December The figure is up from 93.8 in November's final reading.

Economists had expected the index to rise to 94.5.

Experts attributed much of the rise in sentiment to initial reactions to Donald Trump's victory in the race for the White House, expressing optimism for the positive impact of possible economic policies.

The monthly survey of 500 consumers measures attitudes toward topics like personal finances, inflation, unemployment, government policies and interest rates.
