CE Mark for New iPhone Glucose Meters Catapults DarioHealth Higher

According to the World Health Organization, there are about 60 million people in Europe with diabetes. Much like with the United States, the diagnosis number is getter larger, underscored by more people being overweight or obese. Technology is stepping up to try and provide solutions, as we're seeing more "medtech" products coming to market to help people better monitor and manage their disease, from little companies like ALR Technologies (OTCPK:ALRT) and majors like Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL).

Israel-based digital health company DarioHealth Corp. (NASDAQ:DRIO) utilizes big data to help diabetics manage their treatment through the Dario Blood Glucose Monitoring System (glucose meter, disposable test strip cartridge holding 25 test strips, lancing device) and mobile application. The system leverages mobile technologies to log blood glucose data and share with with the appropriate caregivers.

The smart diabetes solution was cleared for marketing by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in December 2015.

On Wednesday, Dario said that it received a CE Mark for its Lightning-enabled version of the Dario™ Blood Glucose Monitoring System. The news ensures that consumers, beginning in the U.K. market, will be able to receive the same quality user experience with DarioHealth on the latest Apple devices, including the brand-new iPhone 8.

This was a necessary move given the fact that Apple once again changed the charging/connection style, which is a challenge to the entire mobile ecosystem.

The new CE mark means Dario can start selling its meter with either a headphone jack or the new Apple Lightning connector.

Investors couldn't get enough of Dario stock at the start of the day subsequent to the news release. After closing Tuesday at $1.80, shares rocketed to as high as $3.64, the highest level since March 30. Shares are still ahead, but have fallen back to $2.41 for a gain of 33.9% with about one hour left in the trading day.
