Summer blockbuster movie “Top Gun: Maverick” has earned $1 billion U.S. at the global box
office, making it the top grossing film of the year so far.
The film passed the $1 billion U.S. milestone this weekend with an estimated North American
total of $521.7 million U.S. and $484.7 million U.S. at overseas theatres for a global cumulative
total of just over $1 billion U.S.
“Top Gun: Maverick” got a boost in its fifth weekend as it was released on Imax and premium
large-format screens in North America. The movie grossed $30.5 million domestically and $44.5
million overseas during this past weekend.
“Top Gun: Maverick” tied for top spot at the North American box office this weekend with new
release “Elvis,” a biopic about the singer starring Tom Hanks.
“Top Gun: Maverick” is only the second movie of the pandemic era to cross the $1 billion U.S.
mark, behind movie “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” which earned $1.89 billion U.S. globally.
Tom Cruise’s previous biggest film was “Mission Impossible: Fallout,” which earned $791 million
U.S. back in 2018.
The first “Top Gun” film, released in 1986, earned $357.8 million U.S. at the global box office,
unadjusted for inflation.
