Meta Platforms And IBM Launch ‘A.I. Alliance’

Meta Platforms (META) and IBM (IBM) have joined forces to launch a group of more than 50 other companies, research groups, and academics called the “A.I. Alliance.”

The group is being billed as a “community” that’s focused on advancing “open, safe, responsible A.I.” Other companies that are part of the artificial intelligence group include Intel (INTC), Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Dell Technologies (DELL).

Academic members of the new group include universities such as Yale, Cornell, and the University of Tokyo. NASA and the National Science Foundation are also members.

The A.I. Alliance said in an online statement that it plans to develop “benchmarks and evaluation standards, tools and other resources” to help develop A.I. systems responsibly.

Meta Platforms was chosen as a leader of the group because it has made its Llama 2 large language learning model free to use for both research and commercial purposes.

IBM was selected as co-leader because it has a long history in open-source software and the company owns Red Hat, which provides services for Linux system users.

Members of the A.I. Alliance spend about $80 billion U.S. a year on research and development (R&D) and employ more than one million people worldwide.

The stock of Meta Platforms has risen 157% this year and trades at $320.02 U.S. per share.

IBM’s stock has gained 14% year-to-date and trades at $161.10 U.S. a share.
