Report: Apple TV Users Will Soon be Able to Watch Amazon Video

According to technology website Recode.net, Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) video subscribers will finally soon be able to watch their shows on their Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) TV devices.

Sources near the two companies say the Amazon app will start appearing on Apple TVs at some point during the third quarter.

The absence of the Amazon app has long been a major issue for Apple TV users, especially those with Amazon Prime. These users want to watch all three of the major video streaming sites – Netflix, YouTube, and Amazon Video – in one spot.

Amazon and Apple have been fighting for years. Amazon stopped selling Apple TVs in 2015, right around the same time as Amazon revealed its video app wouldn’t be included on the device. While an Amazon Video app for iOS devices – iPads and iPhones – exists today, it’s a scaled-down version that won’t allow users to buy programs individually without visiting Amazon’s website.

Both companies are aggressively trying to win in this sector. Amazon sells both Fire TV sticks (which allow users to display the current laptop or smartphone screen on their television) and boxes that compete with Apple TV. Apple has yet to start producing its own video content, although some analysts say such a move is likely coming.

Recode speculates that a truce between the two companies likely came from the top, starting with CEOs Tim Cook and Jeff Bezos.
Apple shares moved more than 1% higher during Friday afternoon trading, while Amazon shares were down 0.5%.
