Google Introduces Foldable Phone, A.I.-Powered Search Engine

Google parent company Alphabet (GOOGL) unveiled a host of new products at its annual
developers conference, including a new foldable smartphone and a search engine powered by artificial intelligence (A.I.).

The suite of new offerings includes the PaLM 2 large language model for A.I. search, new A.I. writing tools for Gmail, a more immersive view of Google Maps, the Pixel 7a smartphone, a Pixel Tablet with a starting price of $499 U.S., and a folding Pixel smartphone that will cost $1,799 U.S.

The Pixel Fold is the company’s first folding phone. Pre-orders have already begun, and shipments are expected to begin in June of this year.

Alphabet had previously teased the Pixel Fold smartphone ahead of the developer conference. The new smartphone features a large inner display and a sizeable front display.

The foldable phone also provides a split view that allows users to use multiple apps simultaneously when open.

Additionally, Alphabet showed off a new version of Google Translate that offers a live, spoken translation between two people and uses both screens to offer running translation during a conversation.

Alphabet’s stock is down 2% over the past 12 months and trading at $111.75 U.S. per share.
