Imagine the beauty of delicate leaves juxtaposed with a plastic bag floating through the air, while a family of ducks wanders by a broken traffic cone.

For Joelle Provost, a painter living and working in Oakland, California, this odd combination of urban refuse and nature is extremely inspiring. As a nature enthusiast, Provost wondered just how famous 19th Century painters would react to the modern environmental crisis.

Her response was to create pieces that reflected her interest in environmentalism and 19th Century styles.

"My goal is to create at least 10 works to be displayed at a solo show in California's Marin County, an environmentalist hub," explains Provost. "Through these pieces, fears about waste and pollution will be brought to the forefront. The purpose is to inspire viewers to see how the natural world is being affected by a lack of environmental concern."

By contrasting works inspired by artists - such as Paul Cezanne, Arnold Bocklin and Gustave Courbet - with loose bags, cans floating in ponds and everyday trash, Provost hopes her art will draw much-needed attention to today's environmental problems.

Provost's work addresses numerous themes of environmental degradation and the stages of grief that humans are forced to endure, due to the loss of various species and plant forms. The subjects within her paintings are inflicted by the everything-is-connected-syndrome in the age of climate change.

To help pay for art supplies, gallery space, promotion costs and studio space, Provost launched a fundraiser on Kickstarter. There, she hopes to raise $12,000 through crowdfunding. She plans to use the funds to produce a minimum of 10 large works. Provost intends to donate 25% of the proceeds from art sales to forest protection through the nonprofit, Wildlife Alliance.
