Gold futures steady after Thursday rally

Gold for December delivery slipped $1.50 to $1,308.40 U.S. an ounce on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Gold on Thursday rallied $24.60, or 1.9%, after China reported a surge in overall imports and exports in July.

Investors on Friday also kept an eye on the U.S. dollar , which edged higher against some of its rivals. Strength in the dollar tends to weigh on dollar-denominated commodities as it makes them more expensive for holders of other currencies.

October platinum rose $3.70 to $1,495.30 U.S. an ounce; it closed Thursday with a gain of $53.30, or 3.7%.

September palladium was up 80 cents to $739.35 U.S. an ounce, extending its 2.1% bounce in the previous session. September copper futures gained three cents to $3.30 U.S. a pound.
