Oil and natural gas production is beginning to ramp up again in Alberta and other parts of western Canada as wildfires in the region subside.
The number of fires burning in Alberta has declined in recent days as rainfall extinguished many of the blazes, allowing some oil and natural gas companies to resume production that had been shutdown since early May.
Alberta now has 71 wildfires, 20 of them classified as “out of control.” That’s down from 93 fires a week ago. Cooler temperatures and rain in coming days are expected to improve the situation further.
NuVista Energy (NVA), which had cut production by the equivalent of 35,000 barrels of oil per day between May 5 and 22, said it has now resumed most of its operations. The company’s daily output is now up to 65,000 barrels of crude oil equivalent a day.
The wildfires that began in early May had shutdown about a fifth (20%) of Canada’s oil and natural gas production at times and led to the evacuation of 40,000 Alberta residents.
