The number of Canadians on the pogey remained virtually the same in the last month of 2014. Figures released Thursday by Statistics Canada showed the number of people receiving regular Employment Insurance (EI) benefits at 495,300 in December, up but 0.7% from November. Compared with December 2013, the number of beneficiaries decreased by 24,500 or 4.7%.
In December, according to the agency, there were more beneficiaries in New Brunswick and Manitoba compared with the previous month. Increases were also posted in Alberta, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and Quebec. There was a slight decline in beneficiaries for British Columbia, and little change in all other provinces.
The nation's number crunchers reports that the change in the number of regular EI beneficiaries reflects various situations, including people becoming beneficiaries, people going back to work and people no longer receiving regular benefits.
