EI benefits jump to record level in May

The number of people receiving regular employment insurance benefits jumped to the highest level on record in May, with Alberta and Ontario showing the biggest increases, Statistics Canada said Tuesday.

IE beneficiaries were up 9.2 percent to 778,700 during the month, after a 3.7 percent rise in April, the federal agency said.

''The number of people receiving regular benefits in May was the highest since comparable data became available in 1997,'' it said.

Statistics Canada said that after two months of small declines, the number of initial and renewal claims increased 5.2 percent to 332,800 in May - also the highest since 1997
