Canadian factory sales fell in August, on fewer shipments of aircraft and automobiles.
Factory sales fell 2.1 percent from a month earlier to $40.9 billion, Statistics Canada said today in Ottawa. Economists surveyed predicted factory shipments would fall 1.6 percent, the median of 18 estimates.
''Going forward, the manufacturing sector is one area that the surging loonie will take a bite,'' said economist Robert Kavcic at BMO Capital Markets.
In Quebec, factory sales fell 4% in August, while Ontario saw a 3.2% decline.
Sales in Alberta rose 4.9%, due mainly to an increase in petroleum and coal products.
