Consumer outlook improves: RBC poll

Canadians are showing an upturn in expectations for their personal economic situations over the next year, according to a survey released Monday.

RBC said that 43% of Canadians polled in December expect their financial picture to improve in the coming 12 months. That was up from 38% in November.

In its RBC Canadian Consumer Outlook, the bank said consumers are showing more signs they are less likely to delay big purchases.

Worries over losing a job were also down last month, with 21% of Canadians saying a member of their household was worried about losing their job or being laid off, down from 27% in the previous month.

While the longer-term outlook for consumers is showing signs of picking up, the short-term picture appears static. The percentage of Canadians who think their personal financial situation is worse than it was three months ago remains fairly constant at 38% in December, compared with 39% in November.

The RBC Canadian consumer outlook index is based on the results of an online survey of 1,018 Canadians, ages 18 and over, conducted by Ipsos Reid between Dec. 8 and 11, 2009.

The survey has an estimated margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
