Egg sales in Canada rose 6.6% in 2017 as more restaurants across the country offer all day breakfast while other outlets add eggs to their menu for the very first time.
In 2017, more than 732 million dozen eggs were produced in Canada. That's a total of 8.78 billion eggs. Last year marked the 11th straight year of increased sales for eggs across Canada. Analysts attribute the growth largely to the fast food industry. In 2017, restaurant chains such as McDonald's and A&W began selling their breakfast sandwiches around the clock. Tim Hortons is now following suit with all day breakfast menu options.
At McDonald’s alone, egg sales rose 25% in 2017 once all-day breakfast began. In total, McDonald’s sold more than 35 million more eggs in Canada last year than it did in 2016. Consumption of breakfast sandwiches is now up to 700 million annually in Canada, an 8% increase over 2016, according to the NPD Group.
“This shows the clear demand for our product. These chains are smart,” said Sarah Caron, with the Egg Farmers of Canada, in a news release.
