Canada's current-account deficit narrowed in the first quarter to $7.8 billion, falling from $10.2 billion in the fourth quarter of 2009, Statistics Canada reported Friday.
The drop was slightly less than the $7.5-billion figure analysts polled by Bloomberg were calling for.
The dollar fell about 30 basis points following the release of the data at 8:30 a.m. to US95.45 cents.
The federal agency said the drop in the current-account deficit was the result of a larger trade in goods surplus and a reduced deficit on international travel.
