Canada is set to reach a significant milestone in its COVID-19 vaccinations this week.
The federal government in Ottawa says Canada is on pace to match the percentage of people in the United States who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 later this week as vaccine shipments continue to pour into the country and more people receive their second inoculation against the respiratory disease.
Ottawa says it expects another 1.4 million doses of the vaccine from Pfizer-BioNTech to arrive within the next seven days and plans to distribute the 1.5 million doses of the Moderna vaccine that arrived in Canada last Friday (July 9).
By the end of this week, Canadian officials expect to have received a total of more than 55 million vaccine doses, including the latest shipments.
Ottawa has promised that it would reach 68 million COVID-19 doses delivered by the end of July and says it is on track to hit that target.
To date, 42.7% of eligible Canadian residents have received two doses of COVID-19 vaccine, giving them full protection against the virus. That is getting close to the 55% of eligible people who have been fully vaccinated in the U.S.
