Inflation was running at an annual rate of 3.3% in April, Statistics Canada said Friday.
That compares to economists' expectations for 3.4% inflation. In March, inflation had been 3.3%.
The Bank of Canada aims for an inflation rate of between 1-3%, with 2% seen as the ideal. Until March, Canada had not seen inflation that exceeded the target range since September 2008.
The core rate of inflation, which excludes volatile items, such as energy and certain foods, was 1.6% in April, as economists expected, and down from 1.7% in March.
The core inflation rate, which the Bank of Canada monitors for underlying trends, had been less than 2% since February 2010.
