The European Union has reached a deal to ban the sale of new diesel and gasoline-powered
vehicles by 2035.
In a written statement, the European Parliament said that the 27 countries that are members of
the European Union, including France and Germany, have come to terms on what is being
called “zero-emission road mobility by 2035.”
The plan aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from new vehicles by 100% from 2021 levels
and will effectively ban the sale of new diesel and gasoline vehicles beginning in 2035.
The European Parliament statement said that smaller automakers producing up to 10,000 new
vehicles could be exempt from the ban until the end of 2035.
The agreement to ban diesel and gas-powered vehicles still needs to be ratified in a formal vote
to be held in the European Parliament in coming days.
