Stocks in Toronto inched up early Tuesday as investors remained on pins and needles over a U.S. presidential election race still viewed as neck-and-neck.
The S&P/TSX composite acquired 5.88 points to begin Tuesday at 12,358.66
The Canadian dollar shed 0.26 cents to 100.61 cents U.S.
Among stocks to watch this morning, MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd., which reported a slight decrease in third-quarter earnings from operations on Monday, as revenue declined due to lower levels of space robotics activity. Shares dipped 75 cents to $55.30 in the early going.
Niko Resources Ltd. said one more of its wells in Trinidad turned out to be dry, adding to its recent disappointments in India and Indonesia. Niko shares faded 42 cents to $11.92.
Israeli officials plan to meet executives of Potash Corp in the next week before deciding on whether to allow the fertilizer producer's proposed $13.5-billion takeover of Israel Chemicals to move forward. Potash shares inched forward 13 cents to $40.27.
Phone directory firm Yellow Media Inc. reported a third-quarter profit, but lower print segment sales hurt revenue. Yellow shares were in the "green" 22 cents to $19.28.

The TSX Venture Exchange advanced 2.83 points to 1,304.76.
Of the 14 Toronto subgroups, eight were higher, led by gold, up 0.5%, materials, advancing 0.3%, and consumer staples, ahead 0.2%.
The half-dozen laggards were weighed mostly by health-care issues, down 1.1%, information technology, off 0.9%, and utilities, sliding 0.4%.

U.S. stocks rose at the open Tuesday as voters headed to the polls on Election Day.
The Dow Jones Industrials gathered 68.27 points to 13,180.70, while the S&P 500 moved up 6.24 to 1,423.50, and the Nasdaq Composite Index was up 0.85 points at 3,000.51
While the latest national polls show that President Obama and Republican opponent Mitt Romney are neck-and-neck, the former Massachusetts governor is an overwhelming favourite of Wall Street, according to a survey of investment strategists and money managers.
In corporate news, Fossil posted quarterly earnings that beat forecasts, but revenue fell short of estimates, sending shares of the accessories maker lower.
Zillow shares dropped sharply after the real estate website delivered a weaker-than-expected revenue outlook for the rest of the year.
AOL shares rose after the company delivered strong earnings and revenue results, as advertising sales climbed 7% during the quarter.
Office Depot swing to a loss in the third quarter, as the company's sales fell 5%. But excluding certain charges, the office supply chain beat earnings expectations, sending shares higher.
Shares of Express Scripts sank after the healthcare management firm said analysts' estimates for its 2013 earnings were "overly aggressive."
The price on the benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury sagged a bit, pushing the yield up to 1.70% from 1.68% late Monday. Treasury prices and yields move in opposite directions.
Oil prices were up 46 cents at $86.11 U.S. a barrel.
Gold prices surged seven dollars per ounce to $1,690.20 U.S.
