Stock markets in Toronto opened higher on Monday, helped by a rise in the price of bullion that fueled gains in shares of gold producers.
The S&P/TSX Composite Index gained 61.01 points to begin Monday at 12,195.92
The Canadian dollar picked up 0.27 cents to 94.76 cents U.S.
Rosebel Gold Mine, the joint venture between Suriname's government and Iamgold, says its net profit rose 7.6% last year to $210.9 million. Iamgold shares took on one cent to $4.25
Thomson Reuters Corp. said it would suspend its early provision to a small group of clients of the widely watched Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan consumer sentiment data at the request of the New York Attorney General. Thomson shares gained 17 cents to $34.57
National Bank Financial resumed coverage on Loblaw Companies with an outperform rating on expectation of future improvement in the company's core retail operations. Loblaw shares improved 44 cents to $47.19
Speaking of things economic, Statistics Canada reported this morning that building permits for May came in at $7.3 billion, up 4.5% from April. The total value of building permits continued to trend upward on the strength of five consecutive monthly increases.

The TSX Venture Exchange subtracted 6.76 points to 877.51
All but three of the 14 Toronto subgroups were higher to begin the day, led by utilities, up 1.2%, while financials and energy each
gained 0.7%.
The three laggards were gold, down 0.2%, health-care, off 0.1%, and global base metals, sliding 0.04%.

Stocks jumped higher Monday, as investors bet that corporate earnings could help stocks prolong the 2013 market rally.
The Dow Jones Industrials gained 107.62 points to 15,243.50
The S&P 500 index picked up 12.18 points to 1,644.07. The tech-rich NASDAQ Composite moved ahead 12.21 points to 3,491.59
Second-quarter earnings season kicks off after the close of trading with results from aluminum producer Alcoa -- a Dow Jones Industrial Average component, whose earnings investors watch as a first-look indicator of how companies fared in the past quarter.
Results are due later in the week from companies including Yum! Brands, JPMorgan and Wells Fargo.

In economic news, the U.S. Federal Reserve is set to release its monthly report on consumer credit at 3 p.m. ET.
Prices for the 10-year U.S. Treasury gained ground, lowering yields to 2.68% from Friday’s 2.73%. Treasury prices and yields move in opposite directions.
Oil prices dropped 79 cents to $102.43 U.S. a barrel.
Gold prices recovered $20.00 to $1,232.70 U.S. an ounce.
