Fed fears down, higher open seen


Futures pointed to a higher open on Friday as worry dissipated about the eventual scaling back of the U.S. Federal Reserve's bond-buying program.

The S&P/TSX composite index spiked 45.32 points to conclude Thursday at 13,475.33, with Friday morning futures up 0.04%.

The Canadian dollar docked 0.30 cents to 94.76 cents U.S. early Friday

CIBC raised the price target on Gildan Activewear to $53 from $51, citing the company's in-line fourth-quarter results.

CIBC cut the price target on Lightstream Resources to $8 from $8.50 after the company announced a 50 percent cut to its monthly dividend and a suspension of its dividend reinvestment plan and share dividend plan.

Morgan Stanley raised the target price of Magna International’s U.S.-listed shares to $93 from $85, says the company's growth opportunities and its buyback reauthorization makes it a top supplier pick.

On the economic slate, Statistics Canada said the Consumer Price Index for October declined 0.1%, after a 0.1% rise the month before. On a year-over-year basis, inflation rose 0.7% last month, compared to a 1.1% jump in the 12 months leading up to September.

The agency also said retail sales for September rose 1.0% to $40.7 billion, a third straight increase, largely due to higher sales at motor vehicle and parts dealers.

Stock markets may be gearing up for another push forward.

Ahead of the opening bell, futures for the Dow Jones Industrials gained three points to 15,978. Futures for the S&P 500 rose 2.60 points, or 0.1% to 1,796.30, and futures for the NASDAQ picked up 6.5 points, or 0.2%, to 3,407

Since January, the Dow has climbed by 22%, the S&P 500 is up by 26% and the NASDAQ has soared by 31%.

On the corporate earnings front, retailers Foot Locker and PetSmart are set to release quarterly results before the opening bell Friday.

Microsoft will also be in focus as the company's new Xbox One goes on sale Friday. This is Microsoft's first new gaming console in eight years.

European markets were flat in midday trading following an upbeat report on German business confidence, which revealed a more positive picture for November.

Most Asian markets closed the week on a positive note with Australia's ASX All Ordinaries gaining 0.9%, Hong Kong's Hang Seng rising 0.5% and

Tokyo's Nikkei up 0.1%. China's benchmark index, the Shanghai Composite, fell 0.4%

Oil prices slid nine cents to $95.35 U.S. a barrel

Gold prices advanced $4.20 to $1,247.80 U.S. an ounce.
