TSX to open week higher


Canadian stocks looked set to open higher on Tuesday as traders return after an extended weekend.

The S&P/TSX composite index was negative 115.48 points, to close the day and the week at 15,215.26, but futures were up 0.4% Tuesday.

Markets in Toronto were closed Monday for Civic Holiday.

The Canadian dollar faded 0.36 cents to 91.33 cents U.S. early Tuesday

China is investigating a Canadian couple who ran a coffee shop on the Chinese border with North Korea for the suspected theft of military and intelligence information and for threatening national security, the country's foreign ministry said.

PetroChina plans to pay the more than $1 billion it needs to complete a takeover of the Dover oil sands project from Athabasca Oil by the end of September, a person with knowledge of the deal told Reuters.

Sycamore Partners, which recently bought Jones Group, Talbots and Hot Topic, is considering a bid for Sears Canada, the New York Post reported, citing a person familiar with the matter.

ON WALLSTREET

Markets are looking calmer early Tuesday but a series of company earnings could liven things up.

Ahead of the opening bell, futures for the Dow Jones Industrials dipped 52 points, or 0.3%, to 16,434. Futures for the S&P 500 fell eight points, or 0.4%, to 1,924, and futures for the NASDAQ eased 14.75 points, or 0.4%, to 3,862.

Companies including Cablevision and MGM Resorts are set to release quarterly results before the opening bell.

Coach shares jumped 5% in pre-market trading. The fashion designer managed to beat estimates despite significant year-to-year slumps in quarterly profit and sales.

CVS Caremark shares rose 2% after the pharmacy chain reported double-digit percentage increases in revenue and profit. Office Depot shares also rose 2% after the retailer reported strong growth in revenue and profit.

Then after the close, Wall Street will get to see earnings from Groupon, Activision, Take-Two, Walt Disney and Zillow.

The U.S. Census Bureau will issue its monthly report on factory orders at 10 a.m. ET. At the same time, the Institute for Supply Management will release data on the performance of the U.S. services sector for July.

European markets were rising in early trading, with sentiment boosted by data showing the euro-zone's manufacturing and services sectors continued improving for the 13th month running in July.

The CAC 40 index in Paris was the best performer in Europe, rising by 0.7%.

Performance on Asian markets was less inspiring. Most major markets fell Tuesday, with the Nikkei 225 in Japan dipping by 1%

Oil prices inched up five cents to $98.34 U.S. a barrel

Gold prices gained $3.40 to $1,292.30 U.S. an ounce.
