Stocks look to surge at open


Stock futures pointed to a higher opening for Canada's main stock index on Tuesday as investors focused on easing tensions between Ukraine and Russia.

The S&P/TSX composite index gained 65.33 points to close Monday at 15,261.64. September futures rose 0.3% Tuesday morning.

The Canadian dollar ducked back 0.21 cents to 91.34 cents U.S. early Tuesday

The North Sea oil and gas operator Ithaca Energy Inc reported a pretax loss for the first half as costs soared.

Canada's Imperial Metals Corp faces huge cleanup costs after a major spill at its Mount Polley mine, which may force the miner to sell part of a prized new asset unless its biggest shareholder steps in to help, bankers and industry executives said.

The Nebraska Supreme Court will soon hear arguments in a dispute over the planned route for TransCanada Corp's Keystone XL pipeline, but a court ruling on the controversial project is likely to be delayed until early 2015, lawyers and activists say.

Canaccord Genuity raised the price target on Cargojet Inc. to $25 from $23, with a buy rating.

U.S. stock futures were moving higher ahead of the opening bell but European markets weren't so chipper. Investors are keeping a wary eye on the situation in Ukraine. Russia said it was sending an aid convoy to the east of the country.

Ahead of the opening bell, futures for the Dow Jones Industrials gained two points to 16,517. Futures for the S&P 500 took on one point to 1,933.50, and futures for the NASDAQ also added one point to 3,806.

Kate Spade will report earnings before the opening bell while Fossil and King Digital, the maker of Candy Crush Saga, will report after the close.

There was more evidence of the damage the Ukraine crisis is causing Germany. The ZEW index of investor sentiment fell sharply this month to its lowest level since December 2012.

Meanwhile, Asian markets mostly moved higher Tuesday. The Australia ASX All Ordinaries led the gainers, shooting up by 1.4%.

Oil prices dipped 81 cents to $97.27 U.S. a barrel

Gold prices gained $3.30 to $1,313.80 U.S. an ounce.
