Higher open foreseen for TSX


Stock futures pointed to a higher opening for Canada's main stock index on Friday, ahead of the employment and manufacturing sales data.

The S&P/TSX composite index gained 28.45 points to close Thursday at 15,291.18. Futures climbed 0.2% Friday.

The Canadian dollar added 0.22 cents to 91.94 cents U.S. early Friday

U.S. securities regulators are looking at the hostile takeover bid made by billionaire investor William Ackman and Valeant Pharmaceuticals for Botox maker Allergan Inc, a person familiar with the matter said on Thursday.

The Peruvian government said on Thursday it hopes to ease local opposition to Canadian miner Bear Creek's stalled Santa Ana silver mine and avoid a costly legal battle with the company.

Tim Hortons, which has offered only one coffee blend in its 50-year history, hopes to lure new coffee drinkers and fend off rivals such as Starbucks Corp and McDonald's Corp with the launch throughout North America of its new dark roast blend.

On the economic beat, Statistics Canada revised last week’s employment report, saying that employment rose by 42,000 in July, the result of a 60,000-unit increase in part-time work. The unemployment rate declined 0.1 percentage points to 7.0%.

What’s more, manufacturing sales rose 0.6% in June to $52.0 billion, the fifth gain in six months.

It looks like markets could end the week in positive territory. U.S. stock futures were higher Friday, building on a string of gains over the last few trading days.

Ahead of the opening bell, futures for the Dow Jones Industrials advanced 45 points, or 0.3%, to 16,727. Futures for the S&P 500 added 4.5 points, or 0.3%, to 1,946.75, and futures for the NASDAQ gained 12.75 points, or 0.3%, to 3,980.75.

Shares in energy-drink maker Monster were up by 20% in pre-market trading after Coca-Cola said it would buy a 17% stake in the company. Shares in Coca-Cola were also edging higher.

Shares in Estee Lauder were volatile in pre-market trading. The cosmetics company is slated to report earnings before the open.

The U.S. government posted its producer price index this morning. The University of Michigan's monthly measure of consumer confidence will follow at 9:55 a.m.

Most European markets were rising by about 1% in afternoon trading.
Nearly all major Asian markets closed with gains.

Oil prices fell $1.68 to $95.69 U.S. a barrel

Gold prices sank $6.60 to $1,307.90 U.S. an ounce.
