Futures point to higher open


Canada's main stock index looked set for a higher start on Monday, indicating Friday's rally on a robust U.S. jobs report could continue as investors feel more confident about global growth prospects.

The S&P/TSX composite index remained higher by 29.14 points to end Friday and the week at 14,789.78, with futures up 0.2% Monday.

The Canadian dollar gained 0.35 to 89.23 cents U.S. early Monday.

Chevron Corp said it would sell a 30% stake in its Duvernay shale properties in Canada to Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Co for $1.5 billion.

NBF cuts price target on Baytex Energy to $50.00 from $53.00, with an outperform rating.

NBF raises rating on Canadian Pacific Railway to outperform from sector perform.

Defense lawyers for a Canadian executive sentenced to 15 years prison in Cuba on bribery and other charges released a raft of documents on Sunday seeking to bolster their case that Cy Tokmakjian was denied a fair trial.

Western University’s Ivey PMI data for September is due at 10 a.m. ET.

The TSX Venture Exchange regained 4.99 points Friday to 882.54.

ON WALLSTREET

Futures warmed Monday to the prospect of a major takeover in the health-care field.

Ahead of the opening bell, futures for the Dow Jones Industrials gained 51 points, or 0.3%, to 16,972. Futures for the S&P 500 gained 6.25 points, or 0.3%, to 1,966.50, and futures for the NASDAQ took on 11 points, or 0.3%, to 4,027.

It looks like Hewlett-Packard's stock is about to soar Monday after reports that the company is looking to split itself up.

The Wall Street Journal cited unnamed sources who said the company would separate its PC and printer operations from its corporate software and services business. The official HP announcement could come as soon as Monday, it said.

Shares in the firm were rising by 6% pre-market.

Two healthcare companies have announced a $12.2-billion U.S. takeover deal.
Medical technology firm Becton, Dickinson and Co is taking over CareFusion in a cash and stock deal that values CareFusion shares at $58.00 U.S. each.

CareFusion's stock was rising by 25% pre-market to hover just below the $58.00 mark.

The Container Store will report earnings after the closing bell.

Later in the week, Yum! Brands, which has been struggling after a tainted food scare in China, will report.

Asian markets ended with mixed results, though Chinese stocks were mostly positive. The Hang Seng in Hong Kong rose by 1.1% as pro-democracy protests wound down. The index was volatile last week as protests swelled across the city.

The positive mood continued in Europe in early trading, despite more gloomy economic data from Germany and the euro-zone. The DAX in Germany was up by 1.2%. German markets were closed Friday, missing out on gains inspired by a strong U.S. jobs report.

Oil prices added 31 cents to $90.05 U.S. a barrel

Gold prices gained $4.20 to $1,197.10 U.S. an ounce.
