Lower open seen for stocks


Stock futures pointed to a lower opening for Canada's main stock index on Thursday

The S&P/TSX composite index rallied 90.02 points, to end Wednesday at 14,666.47, with futures sinking 0.2%.

The Canadian dollar dipped 0.01 cents to 90.01 cents U.S.

Goldcorp is looking to cut costs on its planned and already-delayed $3.9 billion El Morro copper and gold project in Chile, and that may mean new permits are needed and further holdups, its chief executive said on Thursday.

Canaccord Genuity raises its rating on Bank of Montreal to buy from hold, with a target price to $89.00 from $85.00

Canaccord Genuity and National both raised their target price on Jean Coutu Group.

On the economic slate, Statistics Canada said its new housing price index rose 0.3% in August, following no change in July. The increase was the largest since January and mainly the result of strong gains in Ontario and Alberta.

The TSX Venture Exchange faded 6.16 points Wednesday to 848.67.

ON WALLSTREET

Futures on Wall Street were moving steadily lower as the opening bell approached Thursday, after the street’s best day of the year.

Ahead of the opening bell, futures for the Dow Jones Industrials dipped 72 points, or 0.4%, to 16,631. Futures for the S&P 500 fell seven points, or 0.4%, to 1,954.75, and futures for the NASDAQ slipped 12.25 points, or 0.3%, to 4,018.25.

Shares in the Gap fell by roughly 8% in extended trading after CEO Glenn Murphy announced that he is stepping down. The company also said that monthly comparable store sales were flat and Murphy called the month "more challenging" than expected.

Alcoa shares are climbing by about 4% pre-market after the company announced much better than expected quarterly profits. The company has seen its shares surge by just over 100% over the past 12 months.

PepsiCo will report earnings before the opening bell.

The U.S. government was to post weekly jobless claims data this morning.

Oil prices moved lower 0.18 cents to $87.13 U.S. a barrel

Gold prices hiked $24.10 to $1,230.10 U.S. an ounce.
