Strong start foreseen on TSX

Stock futures pointed to a higher opening for Canada's main stock index on Tuesday

The S&P/TSX composite index added 110.09 points to end Monday’s session at 14,337.77, with Tuesday futures up 0.2%.

The Canadian dollar gained 0.18 cents to 88.79 cents U.S. early Tuesday.

Billionaire investor William Ackman, whose fund is the largest shareholder in Allergan Inc., and Valeant Pharmaceuticals said the botox maker's Chief Executive Officer David Pyott tried to discredit Valeant as it was making a hostile takeover bid, court documents showed.

Amaya Gaming Group Inc, which has pivoted to focus on the fast-growing online gambling market, said on Monday it is exploring a sale of its Cadillac Jack subsidiary that makes slot machines and electronic bingo games for casinos.

RBC raised the target price on Cogeco Cable to $70 from $68

NBF resumed coverage on Enercare with an outperform rating, and a price target of $17

RBC raised the target price on Telus to $41 from $40

Corporate earnings are back in focus as the latest bout of market volatility ebbs away.

Ahead of the opening bell, futures for the Dow Jones Industrials added 45 points, or 0.3%, to 16,376. Futures for the S&P 500 gained nine points, or 0.5%, to 1,909, and futures for the NASDAQ were better 28.25 points, or 0.7%, to 3,894.50.

McDonald's, Coca-Cola, Verizon and Lockheed Martin are the big companies reporting quarterly results before the start of trading.

After the close, investors will be parsing through earnings from Yahoo and Six Flags.

Shares in Apple are pushing higher pre-market after the iPhone maker reported better than expected revenue and profit. Sales of the new iPhone 6 were particularly strong.

Chipotle shares are falling by about 4% pre-market after the Mexican restaurant chain warned that 2015 same-store sales will grow at a slower pace.

U.S. existing home sales comes out at 10 a.m. ET.

Most European markets were advancing by more than 1% in morning trading. The mood in Asian stock markets was mixed after new data showed China's economy clocked its worst quarter in more than five years.

Gross domestic product expanded by 7.3% in the third quarter versus the same period last year. This raises doubts over Beijing's ability to meet its own annual growth target.

Oil prices moved higher 24 cents to $82.95 U.S. a barrel

Gold prices tacked on $3.80 to $1,248.50 U.S. an ounce.
