Flat open foreseen for TSX


Stock futures pointed to a flat opening for Canada's main stock index on Tuesday

The S&P/TSX composite index gained 39.40 points to conclude Monday at 14,882.50. Futures for December were unchanged Tuesday.

The Canadian dollar added 0.13 cents to 88.56 cents U.S. early Tuesday.

Sears Canada reported its third straight quarterly loss, as sales continued to decline at the struggling department store chain.

A group led by Canadian property investor Ivanhoe Cambridge has clinched a deal to buy a Manhattan office tower for $2.25 billion from Blackstone Group LP, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the terms of the sale.

Barclays raised the price target on Scotiabank to $75 from $74, with an equal weight rating.

Commercial borrowing by small and medium-sized businesses in Canada declined for the third straight quarter in the July-September quarter, a PayNet survey showed.

The TSX Venture Exchange nosed up 1.21 points Monday to 777.84.

ON WALLSTREET

Markets south of the border are looking calmer Tuesday, but experts say there's plenty happening.

Ahead of the opening bell, futures for the Dow Jones Industrials gained seven points to 17,624. Futures for the S&P 500 were unchanged at 2,039.75, and futures for the NASDAQ inched up 0.5 points to 4,212.75.

Nokia has linked up with Apple supplier Foxconn to make a tablet based on Google's Android operating system. The Finnish company, which sold its smartphone business to Microsoft earlier this year, wants to start selling the N1 tablet in China in the first quarter of 2015, priced at $249 U.S. before taxes.

Dick's Sporting Goods, Home Depot and TJ Maxx will report earnings before the opening bell.

The U.S. government will report the monthly producer price index this morning.

Shares of Urban Outfitters fell in extended trading after reporting lower than expected quarterly profit.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is asking voters for a new mandate just two years into his term, and delaying a sales tax hike, after surprising GDP figures showed the country has fallen back into recession.

The Nikkei 225 index bounced back from Monday's sharp losses to close 2% higher. Other Asian markets were mixed.

The closely-watched ZEW indicator of economic sentiment registered its first increase in 2014 in November, and was much stronger than economists expected.

Oil prices fell 11 cents to $75.53 U.S. a barrel

Gold prices added $13.00 to $1,196.50 U.S. an ounce.
