OPEC meeting weighs on markets

Canada's main stock index was little changed on Thursday as worries about the outcome of an Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries meeting hit oil prices, weighing on shares of energy producers and offsetting gains in most other sectors.

The S&P/TSX composite index dipped 32.53 points to open Thursday at 15,005.88

The Canadian dollar eased 0.23 cents to 88.68 cents U.S.

TransCanada Corp, under pressure from an activist hedge fund to overhaul its business, said on Wednesday its board adopted new bylaws that require advance notice of director nominations. TransCanada shares took on 28 cents to $56.26.

CIBC cuts target price on Foraco International to $0.35 from $0.65, with a sector perform rating. Foraco shares were unchanged at 31 cents.

Health-care shares led the pack of gainers, as Catamaran Corp. sprang up 95 cents, or 1.7%, to $57.50.

Other energy stocks besides TransCanada did not fare so well, as Surge Energy did the opposite of its name, and plummeted 46 cents, or 8.1%, to $5.23, and Athabasca Oil sank 21 cents, or 7.3%, to $2.67.

ON BAYSTREET

The TSX Venture Exchange fell 9.58 points to 771.06.

All but four of the 14 Toronto subgroups were higher in the first hour of trading, was health-care issues climbed 0.9%, while information technology and telecoms each gained 0.5%.

The four laggards were weighed mostly by energy, down 2%, utilities, sinking 0.6%, and gold, down 0.3%.

U.S. markets are shuttered for Thanksgiving. They will reopen for half a day Friday.
