Positive start to last week of ‘14


It was a positive start for stock markets in Toronto on Monday after a long Christmas weekend.

The S&P/TSX composite index took on 54.88 points to begin a short week at 14,664.13

The Canadian dollar backslid 0.04 cents to 86.03 cents U.S.

Canada's Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan said it had bought a 19.25% stake in Birmingham Airport from Australia's Victorian Funds Management Corp, taking its investment in the British airport to 48.25%

Canaccord Genuity cut the price target on Callidus Capital Corp. to $28.50 from $32.00. Callidus shares acquired 34 cents, or 1.9%, to start the session at $18.36

Global base metals led the charge of gaining subgroups, as Altius Minerals rocketed $1.09, or 8.4%, in the early going to $14.14. Teck Resources gained 41 cents, or 2.7%, to $15.91.

The TSX Venture Exchange regained 2.84 points to 677.16

All but two of the 14 Toronto subgroups were higher in the first hour of trading, with global base metals jumping 2.3%, while gold gained 1.9%, and metals and mining surged 1.3%.

The two laggards were health-care, skidding 0.5%, and consumer staples, dipping 0.3%.

ON WALLSTREET

U.S. stocks traded in a narrow range on Monday, amid some pressure on European stocks from Greece's failure to elect a president in a third round of elections.

The Dow Jones Industrials dipped 1.35 points to 18,052.36, with JPMorgan Chase and Home Depot leading gains, while IBM was the greatest laggard..

The S&P 500 added 3.29 points to 2,092.06, with utilities leading gains in six of the sectors and consumer staples replacing telecommunications as the greatest laggard.

The NASDAQ index gained 1.98 points to 4,808.84.

Oil prices edged higher on concerns about disruption to output from Libya.

Greece's benchmark stock index fell as much as 11% after Greek politicians failed to elect a president in a key vote, meaning that a snap general elections lie ahead. The result did not come as a surprise, with many analysts saying prior to the vote that the Greek government needed a "miracle" to avoid a general election.

Prices for 10-year U.S. Treasuries gained ground, lowering yields to 2.21% from Friday’s 2.24%. Treasury prices and yields move in opposite directions.

Oil prices gained 44 cents per barrel to $55.17 U.S.

Gold prices retreated $6.50 an ounce at $1,188.80 U.S.
