Toronto seen up slightly at open


Stock futures pointed to a higher opening for Canada's main stock index on Monday

The S&P/TSX composite index dipped 6.82 points to end Friday, week and month of February at 15,234.34. March futures in Toronto inched up 0.2%.

The Canadian dollar eked up 0.03 cents to 80 cents U.S. early Monday.

BlackBerry said it plans to offer a cloud-based version of its device management platform BES12, a move that will make the service more accessible to small- and medium-sized businesses that need to secure devices on their own networks.

The federal government outlined plans on Sunday to extend for a year exploration tax credits offered to miners and broaden the scope of the credits, in an attempt to boost a sector that has been ravaged by falling commodity prices and a scarcity of funding.

Sun Life Financial said it was looking for acquisition opportunities in business areas such as wealth management that are less impacted low interest rates.

U.S. stock futures are edging up, but the gains are small.

Ahead of the opening bell, futures for the Dow Jones Industrials picked up 19 points, or 0.1%, to 18,146. Futures for the S&P 500 eased 0.75 points, or to 2,102, and futures for the NASDAQ poked ahead five points, or 0.1%, to 4,447.50.

Technology enthusiasts from around the world are converging at the Mobile World Congress to see the latest products being launched by companies such as Samsung, HTC and Huawei.

Shares in Samsung Electronics shot up by nearly 5% in Korea after the company unveiled the new Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge smartphones on Sunday.

BlackBerry also announced new software that will run on different mobile devices, including iPhones.

Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg is set to speak at the Barcelona-based event at 12 p.m. ET Monday.

Sotheby's and 3-D printing company Stratasys are reporting ahead of the open. Caesars Entertainment will report after the close.

The U.S. government will post personal income and spending numbers this morning.

European markets are largely positive but again the early moves are muted. Prices in the euro-zone fell by 0.3% in February, according to a preliminary estimate of inflation. That's an improvement on January, which saw deflation of 0.6%.

Unemployment dropped to 11.2%, its lowest reading since April 2012.

The People's Bank of China slashed interest rates over the weekend to keep prices from weakening too quickly.

Oil prices dipped 1.7% to $48.92 U.S. a barrel

Gold prices peeked up 0.3% $1,216.10 U.S. an ounce.
