Flat opening foreseen for Toronto


Stock futures pointed to a near flat to slightly higher opening for Canada's main stock index on Tuesday, tracking U.S. markets.

The S&P/TSX composite index dipped below breakeven 4.84 points to end Monday at 15,383.59

The Canadian dollar inched forward 0.07 cents to 79.47 cents U.S. early Tuesday.

Gibson Energy said on Monday that it is building 900,000 barrels of crude oil storage at its terminal in Hardisty, Alberta, after receiving sufficient support from shippers.

BMO cut the target price on AuRico Gold to $5.25 from $5.50

Canaccord Genuity raised the target price on Belo Sun Mining to 70 cents from 60 cents

Barclays raised the target price on Hudbay Minerals to $14 from $13

U.S. stock futures are looking steady ahead of the open. European markets are mixed in early trading.

Ahead of the opening bell, futures for the Dow Jones Industrials gained six points to 17,916. Futures for the S&P 500 dipped 0.75 points to 2,085.75, and futures for the NASDAQ eked up 1.25 points to 4,404.50.

JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, andJohnson & Johnson are all reporting quarterly results ahead of the open.

Wall Street will be keeping a close eye on JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon as he comments on his bank's latest earnings during a morning conference call.

Last time around, Dimon said the bank was "under assault" by regulators.

Meanwhile, Intel will report after the close.

Nokia confirmed Tuesday it is in "advanced discussions" to buy Alcatel-Lucent. Both firms provide equipment, infrastructure and support to the telecommunications industry.

Shares in Nokia were declining by 7% in Europe, while shares in Alcatel-Lucent were surging by about 12%.

In the U.S., the Census Bureau is reporting March retail sales data this morning.

Asian markets ended the day with mixed results. In Hong Kong, the main index closed with a loss of 1.6% Tuesday after staging an awe-inspiring rally over the last few days. The Hang Seng has risen by about 17% since the start of the year.

Oil prices gained 44 cents to $52.35 U.S. a barrel

Gold prices slid $11.70 to $1,187.60 U.S. an ounce.
