TSX hopes to keep momentum


Investors are hoping for a repeat of Wednesday’s successful markets, as oil prices perked, taking other sectors up with it.

The S&P/TSX composite index gained 61.59 points to close Wednesday at 15,450.87.

The Canadian dollar dipped 0.08 cents to 81.26 cents U.S. early Thursday.

U.S. stock futures were flat in early trading while international markets were mixed.

Ahead of the opening bell, futures for the Dow Jones Industrials subsided 53 points, or 0.3%, to 17,969. Futures for the S&P 500 faded 7.25 points, or 0.4%, to 2,092.50, and futures for the NASDAQ dipped 17.25 points, or 0.4%, to 4,404.50.

Citigroup and Goldman Sachs are reporting ahead of the open. American Express will report after the close.

Etsy will start trading Thursday on the NASDAQ. It priced its initial public offering at $16 U.S. a share Wednesday, the high end of its expected range.

Netflix is rallying nearly 12% pre-market following a surge in after-hours trading as the firm reported it added 4.9 million members during the first quarter.

The U.S. government will post weekly jobless claims. The Census Bureau will report monthly housing starts and building permits.

European markets were mainly weaker in early trading.

ButUnilever shares got a 4.4% boost in London after first quarter sales beat expectations.

Asian markets ended the session with gains. China's Shanghai Composite pared Wednesday's losses with a 2.7% jump. Stocks in China are on fire -- up nearly 80% since November -- stoking fears that a bubble is forming.

Oil prices faded a dollar to $55.39 U.S. a barrel

Gold prices gained $5.30 to $1,206.60 U.S. an ounce.
