TSX Streak Continues


Markets in Toronto jumped again Monday morning, led by mining and energy stocks as crude oil prices extended recent gains and gold rose.

The S&P/TSX Composite Index picked up from where it left off at the end of the week, galloping ahead 120.92 points to yet another 2016 high of 13,333.42, now aiming for a win streak of eight straight sessions.

The Canadian dollar eased 0.17 cents higher to 74.94 cents U.S.

Corus Entertainment's minority shareholders are set to approve its $2.65-billion bid for Shaw Communications Inc's media assets, despite vocal opposition from private equity firm Catalyst Capital.

Shares in the entertainment giant dropped two cents to $10.61.

Raymond James cut the target price on Endeavour Mining to $13.25 from $14.00 with an outperform rating.

Endeavour Mining climbed 29 cents, or 2.6%, to $11.54.

Desjardins raised the target price on Mandalay Resources to $1.15 from $1.05, with a buy rating.

Mandalay Resources acquired two cents, or 2.3%, to 89 cents.

Raymond James raised rating on Oceanagold to outperform from market perform.

Oceanagold shares hiked 23 cents, or 6.1%, to $3.99.

ON BAYSTREET

The TSX Venture Exchange picked up 8.81 points to 571.20

All but three of the 13 TSX subgroups were higher to begin the week, as metals and mining hiked 5.4%, materials took on 3.3%, and gold soared 3.2%.

The three laggards were consumer staples, stepping back 0.2%, telecoms, down 0.1%, and real-estate, off 0.04%.

ON WALLSTREET

U.S. stocks traded in a range Monday, after their first three-week rally of the year so far, as investors awaited indications on monetary policy around the world.

The Dow Jones Industrial average eked up 2.33 points to 17,000.10, with Wal-Mart and DuPont contributing the most to gains.

The S&P 500 retreated 6.68 points to 1,993.31. Materials led advancers in the S&P 500, followed by energy.

The NASDAQ index sank 22.16 points to 4,694.86

Prices for the 10-year Treasury dipped, raising yields to 1.92% from Friday’s 1.88%. Treasury prices and yields move in opposite directions.

Oil prices added 55 cents a barrel to $36.47 U.S.

Gold prices popped $9.53 to $1,268.48 U.S. an ounce.
