Earnings Season Starts, Futures Bolt


Stock futures pointed to a higher opening for Canada's main stock index on Monday ahead of the much-awaited corporate earnings season.

The S&P/TSX Composite Index tallied 130.29 points, or 1%, to close Friday and the week at 13,396.73, with June futures climbing 0.6% early Monday.

The Canadian dollar inched higher 0.04 cents to 77.03 cents U.S. early Monday.

TransCanada Corp on Sunday said it had restarted the 590,000- barrel-per-day Keystone crude pipeline at reduced pressure after receiving U.S. approval.

National Bank Financial cut the rating on Alamos Gold to sector perform from outperform

Barclays cut the target price on Canadian Pacific Railway to $185.00 from $190.00

RBC raised the target price on Franco Nevada to $98.00 from $91.00

U.S. stock futures are holding steady and then some ahead of the open.

Ahead of the opening bell, futures for the Dow Jones Industrials jumped 57 points, or 0.3%, to 17,542, while futures for the S&P 500 hiked 7.25 points, or 0.4%, to 2,048. NASDAQ futures leaped 18.25 points, or 0.4%, to 4,485.5

Alcoa unofficially kicks off the U.S. corporate earnings season on Monday after the markets close.

Later in the week, investors will hear from major banks like JP Morgan Chase and Bank of America, alongside American carrier Delta Air Lines.

Investors continue to monitor Yahoo after the parent company behind the British newspaper, The Daily Mail, confirmed it's considering a bid for the struggling Internet giant. Shares in Yahoo are edging up in pre-market trading.

Verizon and Google have also reportedly been considering bids for the company. Both declined to comment about the matter last week.

And Tesla shares are also being watched closely as the company holds a conference call at noon ET to discuss "an update" from the firm. The company recently unveiled a new vehicle called the Model 3. Shares in the electric car manufacturer have rallied by just over 20% in the last month.

European markets are mostly in positive territory in early trading. Asian markets ended the day with mixed results.

Oil prices fell 25 cents to $39.47 U.S. a barrel

Gold prices gained $8.71 to $1,249.40 U.S. an ounce.
