Futures Boosted by Oil Prices


Canada's main stock index was set to open higher on Monday, boosted by higher oil prices.

The S&P/TSX Composite lost 48.61 points to finish Friday at 14,747.45, with September futures inching up 0.2%.

The Canadian dollar took on 0.23 cents to 77.41 cents U.S. early Monday

BMO raises target price on Altus Group to $27.00 from $24.00, with an outperform rating

TD Securities cut the rating on Crescent Point Energy to buy from action list buy

BMO cut the target price on Sun Life Financial to $45.00 from $46.00

On the economic beat, the Canadian Real Estate Association was due out this morning with its national home sales figures for July.

The markets are set to open Monday with traders wondering whether stocks can continue their record-setting run.

Ahead of the opening bell, futures for the Dow Jones Industrials hiked 45 points or 0.2%, to 18,568, while futures for the S&P 500 gained 4.5 points, or 0.2%, at 2,184.75. NASDAQ futures took on 9.25 points, or 0.2%, to 4,813.50

Shares in Activision Blizzard are rising ahead of the open. Analysts have recently been upgrading their financial expectations for the company, which is behind popular games such as Call of Duty and World of Warcraft. Shares are trading close to an all-time high.

European markets are all in positive territory in early trading. The DAX in Germany just hit its highest level of the year after taking a long time to recover from steep losses in January.

Most Asian markets ended the day with decent gains. The Shanghai Composite shot up by 2.4%, but it's still down by roughly 12% since the start of the year.

Japan reported its second quarter gross domestic product data on Monday, showing the economy is growing -- but only just.

The country managed meager GDP expansion of only 0.2% in the second quarter, according to official data.

Oil prices gained 23 cents to $44.72 U.S. a barrel

Gold prices added $1.20 at $1,344.40 U.S. an ounce.
