Futures in Canada’s largest market edged higher, as oil prices climbed after an attack on a Nigerian oil pipeline helped ease global supply glut concerns

The S&P/TSX Composite took a header, losing 183.21 points, or 1.2%, to close Wednesday at 14,595.11

The Canadian dollar dipped 0.05 cents to 74.7 cents U.S. early Thursday.

Agrium Inc reported a surprise quarterly loss as it grapples with low fertilizer and crop prices, and also cut its full-year profit forecast.

BCE Inc reported a 1.8% jump in quarterly profit, helped by an increase in net postpaid subscribers.

Canadian Natural Resources reported a bigger-than-expected quarterly loss due to lower prices.

Enbridge Inc reported a quarterly profit that missed estimates as warmer-than-expected weather weighed on its unit that distributes natural gas for heating purposes.

Encana Corp posted an operating quarterly profit as lower costs helped offset the impact of weak commodity prices.

Kinross Gold reported better-than-expected third-quarter earnings on the back of a stronger gold price and slightly higher production

Magna International reported a better-than-expected quarterly profit, helped by strong demand from Asia and Europe.

SNC-Lavalin Group reported an 11% fall in quarterly revenue due to weakness in its engineering and construction business.

The TSX Venture Exchange fell 9.45 points, or 1.2%, Wednesday to 770.11

ON WALLSTREET

U.S. stock index futures pointed to a mixed open on Thursday as traders geared up for next week's presidential election, eyed data and a big day of earnings.

Ahead of the opening bell, futures for the Dow Jones Industrials gained 35 points, or 0.2%, to 17,914, while futures for the S&P 500 added 3.25 points, or 0.2%, to 2,095.50. NASDAQ futures dropped 0.75 points to 4,716

Spirits in the investment community seem to have gotten a lift from a new survey on the U.S. presidential race, showing Hillary Clinton's lead over Donald Trump rising back up to six percentage points.

On the earnings front, Starbucks, Activision Blizzard, Kraft Heinz and El Pollo Loco are among companies due to report after the bell.

On the data front, initial claims and productivity and costs data are due to come out before the bell. The ISM non-manufacturing index and factory orders are set to be released at 10:00 a.m. ET.

Meanwhile, October payrolls are due to be released on Friday, which could give further indication on when the Federal Reserve could next raise interest rates.

In Europe, markets rose after a United Kingdom court ruling said the country would have to obtain parliamentary approval to trigger Article 50 and begin the process of leaving the European Union. The Shanghai Composite in China closed 0.8% higher. Markets in Japan were closed for a public holiday.

Oil prices picked up 30 cents to $45.64 U.S. a barrel

Gold prices fell $17.50 to $1,290.70 U.S. an ounce.
