Markets Expected to Start Higher

Stock futures pointed to a higher opening for Canada's main stock index, tracking gains in U.S. stock futures.

The S&P/TSX Composite finished Thursday down 5.71 points 15,075.20

The Canadian dollar nicked higher 0.01 cents to 74.13 U.S. early Friday.

The federal government will announce its decision on Enbridge’s two major pipeline projects on Tuesday. Energy industry officials and environmental groups expect Ottawa to veto the proposed Northern Gateway line from Alberta's oil sands to the Pacific province of British Columbia and approve Enbridge's plan to replace the Canadian segments of its aging Line 3 from Alberta to Wisconsin.

More than 80% of Kirkland Lake Gold’s shareholders have voted in favour of the mid-tier miner's takeover of Newmarket Gold, according to two sources familiar with the situation, marking the end of a contentious process. Over 90% of the Newmarket shareholders who voted on the acquisition also backed Kirkland's all-stock offer, valued at about $1 billion when announced on Sept. 29.

BMO raised the target price on TransAlta Corp. to $7.50 from $6.50, saying the Alberta government's decision to provide compensation to the company is a positive development.

ON WALLSTREET

U.S. stock index futures pointed to a higher open on Friday as traders eyed economic data amid what is likely to be subdued trading due to the Thanksgiving holiday.

Ahead of the opening bell, futures for the Dow Jones Industrials advanced 53 points, or 0.3%, to 19,107. Futures for the S&P 500 added 4.75 points, or 0.2%, to 2,205.50. NASDAQ futures picked up 8.5 points, or 0.2%, to 4,858.

Equity markets were closed Thursday for Thanksgiving. They’ll resume business this morning, but will close at 1 p.m. ET. Bond markets are closed Friday.

On the data front, the U.S. trade deficit totaled $62 billion in October. The November read on the IHS Markit non-manufacturing index is also due at 9:45 a.m. ET.

European markets were fairly flat on Friday.

In Asia, the Shanghai Composite in China closed 0.6% higher while the Nikkei in Japan closed 0.3% higher.

Oil prices shed 50 cents to $47.46 U.S. a barrel

Gold prices slid $2.10 at $1,187.20 U.S. an ounce.
