Stocks Begin Day Positive

Equities in Canada’s largest market followed their American cousins – though not nearly so radically – up on the scale, absorbing some of the positive vibes from the White House.

The S&P/TSX Composite started the day up 41.48 points to 15,652.17

The Canadian dollar muscled up 0.21 cents at 76.23 cents U.S.

Canada's main stock index moved within reach of its all-time high on Tuesday as base metal and oil prices rose and U.S. President Donald Trump smoothed the path for TransCanada Corp's Keystone XL pipeline.

TransCanada, for its part, began the session up 75 cents, or 1.2%, to $64.99.

Techs led gainers on the index, particularly BlackBerry, which gained five cents to $9.53.

Among financials, Manulife sprung 35 cents, or 1.4%, to $25.36, while Bank of Montreal picked up 84 cents to $100.09.

Health-care issues also sprinted, as Valeant Pharmaceuticals acquired a dime to $18.01

Gold plays stumbled, though, as Barrick Gold demurred 32 cents, or 1.3%, to $23.52, while Goldcorp faltered 28 cents, or 1.3%, to $20.83.

ON BAYSTREET

The TSX Venture Exchange scaled back 5.12 points to 801.62

Seven of the 12 subgroups were higher on the day, with information technology up 0.8%, financials ahead 0.7%, and health-care, up 0.5%.

The five laggards were weighed most by gold, dulling in price 1.9%, materials, sliding 0.7%, and telecoms, off 0.3%

ON WALLSTREET

U.S. equities rose to all-time highs on Wednesday after a series of executive orders from President Donald Trump increased bullish sentiment on Wall Street.

The Dow Jones Industrials leaped 118.64 points to 20,031.35, as Boeing and Caterpillar contributed the most gains.

The S&P 500 grew 14.87 points from Tuesday`s all-time high to 2,292.47, with information technology and financials leading advancers.

The NASDAQ composite index took on 39.15 points from Tuesday`s all-time high to 5,640.16

Investors also paid attention to a series of corporate quarterly results, as Dow components Boeing posted earnings and revenue that beat Wall Street expectations. United Technologies, another Dow component, posted profit and sales that largely met analyst expectations.

AT&T, eBay,Qualcomm, F5 Networks, Las Vegas Sands, Vertex Pharma and Western Digital are among the major companies all due to report after the market close.

In economic news, the FHFA House Price index rose 0.5% in November. Mortgage rates, meanwhile, rose 4% last week.

Trump was expected to roll out executive orders on immigration on Wednesday, starting with steps to tighten border security, including his proposed wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Prices for the benchmark 10-year Treasury note fell raising yields to 2.5% from Tuesday’s 2.46%. Treasury prices and yields move in opposite directions.

Oil prices subsided 51 cents to $52.67 U.S. a barrel

Gold prices slouched $16.20 to $1,194.60 U.S. an ounce.
