On the economic slate, Statistics Canada reported the economy created 35,000 jobs last month, and the unemployment rate rose 0.1 percentage points to 6.3%.
The agency said mployment gains in the month were driven by full-time work (which improved 89,000), while 53,000 fewer people worked part-time
Meanwhile, Canada's merchandise trade deficit with the world totaled $3.2 billion in September, essentially unchanged from the previous month.
Exports were down 0.3% on lower passenger car and light truck exports, while imports decreased 0.3% on lower prices.
The U.S. Commerce Department, accusing Canada of unfairly subsidizing and dumping softwood lumber in the United States, on Thursday set final duties on imports and Canada said it would appeal the decision, which comes during tense NAFTA trade talks.

U.S. stock index futures pointed to a slightly higher open Friday after the release of a disappointing jobs report.
Futures for the Dow Jones Industrials gained 27 points, or 0.1%, to 23,471
S&P 500 futures took on one point to 2,577.75, while futures on the NASDAQ Composite index acquired 28 points or 0.5% to 6,263.75.
On the earnings front, Bloomin' Brands, Cinemark, and Sotheby's were among the companies that reported earnings before the bell. No major companies are expected to report after the close.
Looking to the central bank space, investors are likely to still be digesting the news that President Donald Trump nominated Fed Governor Jay Powell as the person to take on the role as head of the U.S. Federal Reserve from February 2018. Powell will be replacing current Chair Janet Yellen when her tenure expires.
The U.S. economy added 261,000 jobs last month. Economists expected a gain of 310,000 jobs. The report also showed average hourly earnings remained flat for October.
Other data set for release Friday included the U.S. Services Purchasing Managers’ Index, followed by factory orders and the non-manufacturing Institute for Supply Management report on business.
Overseas, European stocks were mostly higher, while in Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index gained 0.3%. Japanese markets were closed for holiday.
Oil prices inched up 17 cents to $54.71 U.S. per barrel.
Gold prices dipped 50 cents to $1,277.60 U.S. an ounce.
