Futures Unchanged to Start Week

Stock futures pointed to a flat opening for Canada's main stock index on Monday even as oil prices slipped on rising U.S. output.

The S&P/TSX Composite Index retained gains of 39.11 points to close Friday and the week at 15,577.81

The Canadian dollar dipped 0.11 cents to 77.94 cents U.S. early Monday

March futures inched 0.01% higher Monday.

U.S. stock index futures pointed to higher open Monday morning, after the latest jobs report eased lingering concerns over inflation and the prospect of faster rate hikes.

Futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average hiked 64 points, or 0.3%, to 25,424

S&P 500 futures added 6.75 points, or 0.2%, to 2,795 while futures on the NASDAQ Composite claimed 30 points, or 0.4%, to 7,154.25

Tilly's Inc. is among a spate of companies set to release earnings Monday.

On Monday, the U.S. is set to release its monthly budget statement for February at around 2 p.m. ET. Market expectations are pricing in a $216-billion deficit for the federal government's operating budget.

In Europe on Monday, equities were trading higher as a relief rally swept across global markets. Inflation worries appeared to dissipate after U.S. economic data showed annual growth in average hourly earnings slowed to 2.6% after a spike at the start of 2018. Although the same data on Friday showed non-farm payrolls jumped by 313,000 last month.

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 zoomed 1.7%, while in Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index vaulted 1.9%.

Oil prices lost 38 cents to $61.66 U.S. per barrel.

Gold prices settled $6.30 to $1,317.70 U.S. an ounce.
