Friday futures set to climb

Futures pointed to a higher opening for Canada's main stock index on Friday as oil prices rose, supported by signs that U.S. sanctions on Iran are reducing global crude supply.

The S&P/TSX Composite Index dropped 20.55 points to close Thursday at 16,326.79

The Canadian dollar tacked on 0.13 cents to 76.50 cents U.S. early Friday

U.S. stock index futures rose slightly on Friday as talks between the U.S. and China ended without a deal and traders awaited a speech from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell.

Futures for the Dow Jones Industrials hiked 48 points, or 0.2%, to 25,718

S&P 500 futures inched up 4.75 points, or 0.2%, to 2,862.75, while futures for the NASDAQ composite moved ahead 16.75 points, or 0.2%, to 7,441.25

Foot Locker and Ubiquiti Networks are both out with earnings Friday

The two world powers concluded talks Thursday with no breakthrough — most market observers did not have high hopes for the meeting after President Donald Trump said he did not "anticipate much" to be resolved on tariffs during the course of the talks.

America and China hit each other's economies with another round of levies Thursday, both targeting $16 billion worth of goods with 25% duties. Gains stateside were capped by dampened sentiment on trade risks.

On the data front, durable goods orders figures are due at 8:30 a.m. ET.

Overseas, in Japan, the Nikkei 225 added 0.9% while in Hong Kong, the Hang Seng index subsided 0.4%.

Oil prices gained 72 cents to $68.55 U.S. a barrel.

Gold prices picked up $4.80 to $1,198.80 U.S. an ounce.
