Canada's main stock index opened higher on Monday as a rise in oil prices lifted shares of energy companies.
The S&P/TSX Composite Index gained 35.3 points to Monday to 16,125.57
The Canadian dollar dipped 0.05 cents to 75.99 cents.
Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland said on Friday she and her U.S. counterpart were making "very good progress" in talks to save the North American Free Trade Agreement amid increasing Canadian optimism that a deal could be reached, even if a conclusion did not appear imminent.
Cenovus Energy has signed a deal to move more crude with Canadian National Railway.
Cenovus shares shot up 63 cents, or 5.4%, to $12.34, while CNR shares chugged forward 37 cents to $113.95.
Credit Suisse assumes coverage of Lundin Mining with neutral rating with a price target of $10. Lundin shares docked seven cents, or 1.17%, to $6.37.
JP Morgan cut the target price on First Quantum Minerals to $15.90 from $17.40. First Quantum shares surrendered 10 cents to $14.48.
RBC raised the rating on Onex Corp. to top pick from outperform. Onex shares galloped $2.21, or 2.5%, to $91.27.
ON BAYSTREET
The TSX Venture Exchange ballooned 8.81 points, or 1.2%, to 720.87
All but two of the 12 subgroups were positive in the first hour of trade, as energy gushed 0.8%, health-care was 0.7% haler, and utilities moved forward 0.4%.
The two solitary laggards were gold, falling away 0.5%, and materials, off 0.1%.
ON WALLSTREET
Stocks traded higher on Monday as tech shares tried to rebound from sharp losses in the previous week.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 53.06 points to 25,969.60, as Nike and Home Depot outperformed.
The S&P 500 regained 8.66 points to 2,880.34, as tech rose 0.2%.
The NASDAQ inched back 0.28 points to 7,902.27, as Amazon and Alphabet climbed.
Amazon shares rose 0.8%, while Alphabet's stock climbed 0.4%. Netflix, meanwhile, rose 0.4%.
Tesla shares rose 4.1% after an analyst at Baird said investors should buy them "even with drama." The analyst cited the potential of Tesla's "Gigafactory" to give the company a competitive advantage long-term.
The Justice Department said last week Attorney General Jeff Sessions will meet with state attorneys general later in September to discuss worries surrounding tech companies that "may be hurting competition and intentionally stifling the free exchange of ideas on their
platforms."
Prices for the benchmark for the 10-year U.S. Treasury stayed put, keeping yields at Friday’s 2.94%.
Oil prices eked up 60 cents to $68.35 U.S. a barrel.
Gold prices grew $1.60 to $1,202.30
