Canada's main stock index rose at the open on Monday led by materials companies as gold prices hit a more than one-week peak and trade tensions between the United States and China boosted appetite for safe-heaven assets.
The S&P/TSX Composite Index gained 14.39 points to start Monday at 16,244.43
The Canadian dollar settled 0.04 cents to 74.38 cents U.S.
RBC raised the target price Heroux Devtek to $21.00 from $20.00. Heroux shares took on 24 cents, or 1.5%, to $15.99.
BMO raised the target price on Toronto-Dominion Bank to $85.00 from $82.00. TD shares gained 11 cents to $76.21.
Raymond James raised the target price on PrairieSky Royalty to $20.50 from $20.00. PrairieSky shares were stable at $17.72.
Oil prices surrendered two cents to $58.61 U.S. a barrel.
Gold prices hiked $1.90 to $1,285.50 U.S. an ounce.

The TSX Venture Exchange acquired 1.6 points to 609.28.
All but three of the 12 Toronto subgroups were positive to start the session, as health-care surged 0.5%, while information technology and consumer discretionary stocks each picked up 0.2%.
The three laggards were energy, down 0.4%, utilities, off 0.3%, and communications, sliding 0.1%.
