Futures Demur Slightly Monday

Futures for Canada's main stock index were marginally lower on Monday, as investors seemed to take a breather after the country's bourse hit a record high on Friday.

The TSX Composite Index deducted 11.94 points to close a short week Friday at 17,168.21. The index gained nearly 50 points, or 0.3%, during the week.

The Canadian dollar eked up 0.06 cents U.S. to 76.54 cents early Monday

March futures declined 0.1% Monday.

Markets will be closed on Wednesday for New Year’s Day

Maxar Technologies said it would sell its space robotics business to a consortium led by Northern Private Capital for $1 billion, in a bid to ease its debt.

RBC raised the price target on Morguard to $221 from $217

TD Securities raised the rating on Conifex Timber to hold from reduce.

U.S. stock futures were flat on Monday, the penultimate trading day of a record-breaking year for equities.

Futures for the Dow Jones Industrials gained 27 points, or 0.1%, Monday to 28,637.

Futures for the S&P 500 moved up 3.5 points, or 0.1%, at 3,241.

Futures for the NASDAQ Composite gained 5.5 points, or 0.1%, to 8,788.75.

U.S. equities have enjoyed a strong rally in December, with the main indexes hitting record highs last week amid year-end optimism. The S&P 500 has notched five straight weeks of gains, rising 29.2% in 2019. The benchmark is within reach of an historic year, sitting less than one percentage point away from having its best year since 1997.

In terms of data, U.S. international trade and retail inventories figures for November were due to be released at 8:30 a.m. ET.

Overseas, in Japan, the Nikkei 225 slipped 0.8%, Monday, while in Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index gained 0.3%.

Oil prices picked up 38 cents to $62.10 U.S. a barrel.

Gold prices dropped $2.90 to $1,515.20 U.S. an ounce.
