Lower Start Foreseen on Final Day of 2019

Futures on Canada’s largest stock market edged lower on Tuesday as investors remained on the sidelines ahead of the New Year holiday.

The TSX Composite Index stumbled 69.65 points to finish Monday at 17,089.56

The Canadian dollar gained 0.28 cents U.S. to 76.84 cents early Tuesday

March futures were down 0.2% Tuesday.

Markets will be closed on Wednesday for New Year’s Day

French aeronautics group Latecoere has agreed to buy Bombardier's electrical wiring interconnection system business based in the Mexican state of Querétaro for around $50 million.

U.S. stock index futures edged higher Tuesday morning, ahead of the last trading day of 2019.

Futures for the Dow Jones Industrials faded 19 points, or 0.1%, Tuesday to 28,421.

Futures for the S&P 500 sank two points, or 0.1%, at 3,221.50.

Futures for the NASDAQ Composite dipped 8.5 points, or 0.1%, to 8,725.25.

U.S. equities dropped from their all-time highs on Monday as investors opted for less risk. Trading has also been impacted by a lower activity due to the holiday season. Nonetheless, the S&P is on track to see its best yearly performance since 2013.

Traders are set to enter the New Year with international trade and political developments on the horizon. The U.S. is set to sign a so-called first phase trade deal with China in January.

Trade negotiators will also have to solve some differences with Europe, and later in the year, U.S. voters will head to the polls for the next presidential election.

In terms of data on Tuesday, consumer confidence numbers are expected at 10 a.m. ET.

Overseas, in Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index lost 0.5%, in the year’s final trading day, while in Japan, markets were closed.

Oil prices subsided 76 cents to $60.92 U.S. a barrel.

Gold prices were boosted $5.10 to $1,523.70 U.S. an ounce.
