Futures Flat as Stocks Reel from Monday Losses

Futures for Canada's main stock index were unchanged on Tuesday, as oil prices were pressured on concerns over the spread of the coronavirus impacting demand.

The TSX Composite Index tumbled 280.79 points, or 1.6%, to conclude an ugly Monday at 17,562.74.

The Canadian dollar eked higher 0.02 cents early Monday at 75.27 cents U.S.

March futures were up 0.1% early Tuesday.

Bank of Nova Scotia on Tuesday beat Wall Street estimates for quarterly profit, boosted by strong growth in its global banking and markets unit.

Bank of Montreal reported a 5.4% rise in quarterly profit on Tuesday, helped by strength in its Canadian personal and commercial banking as well as capital markets businesses.

The TSX Venture Exchange fell 14.92 points, or 2.6%, Monday to 567.75

ON WALLSTREET

U.S. stock index futures pointed to slight gains on Tuesday following the market’s worst decline in two years on concerns the coronavirus outbreak would dent global economic growth.

Futures for the Dow Jones Industrials gained 141 points, or 0.5%, early Tuesday to 28,109.

Futures for the S&P 500 added 16.5 points, or 0.5%, at 3,242.75.

Futures for the NASDAQ Composite grew 80.25 points, on 0.9%, to 9,171.25.

The seesaw trading came after United Airlines and Mastercard warned about the potential impact the coronavirus will have on 2020 results. The shares added to their Monday regular session declines with United losing 0.4% and Mastercard dropping 2%.

Micron shares also kept a lid on market sentiment Tuesday after a Bank of America analyst downgraded them to underperform from hold. The downgrade sent Micron down more than 1% in the pre-market.

Investors fled stocks as a surge in coronavirus cases outside of China intensified fears of a prolonged global economic slowdown.

Overseas, in Japan, the Nikkei 225 returned from holiday to dump 3.3%, while in Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index recovered 0.3%,

Oil prices were unchanged at $51.43 U.S. a barrel.

Gold prices handed back $27.10 to $1,649.50 U.S. an ounce.
