Toronto Markets Resume Climb

Canada's main stock index had the spotlight all to itself, and hit a fresh record high on Monday, on course for its fourth straight month of gains as a jump in oil prices lifted energy stocks.

The TSX acquired 42.66 points to kick off Monday at 19,894.84, yet another intraday high.

The Canadian dollar subtracted 0.06 cents to 82.72 cents U.S.

Pieridae Energy has hired Japanese lender MUFG Bank to help raise $10 billion for its proposed Goldboro liquefied natural gas (LNG) export plant in Nova Scotia.

Pieridae shares picked up a penny, or 2.4%, to 43 cents.

BMO raised the price target on National Bank of Canada to $101.00 from $97.00. National shares gained 13 cents to $94.41,

Cormark Securities raises target price on Royal Bank of Canada to $136.00 from $130.00. Shares in Canada’s largest bank headed lower 21 cents to $125.41.

On the economic calendar, Statistics Canada’s industrial product price index rose 1.6% month over month in April and 14.3% compared to April 2020 in April, while its raw material price index hiked1.0% on a monthly basis in April and 56.4% compared to April 2020.

Overseas, in Japan, the Nikkei 225 docked 1% Monday, while in Hong Kong, the Hang Seng index inched up 0.1%.
Oil prices leaped 93 cents to $67.25 U.S. a barrel.

Gold prices gained $2.80 to $1,888.70 U.S.

The TSX Venture Exchange gathered 3.44 points to 969.72.

Seven of the 12 subgroups moved upward, led by energy, rumbling 1.6%, while information technology clicked 0.7% higher, and industrials advanced 0.3%.

The five laggards were weighed most by health-care, down 0.9%, while gold slid 0.2%, and consumer discretionary lost 0.1%.
