TSX Gains to Start Holiday-Shortened Week

Canada's main stock index opened higher on Tuesday, with energy and materials stocks leading gains tracking higher oil and metal prices as traders returned after a long weekend.

The TSX gained 21.61 points to begin a short week at 20,176.90.

The Canadian dollar perked 0.14 cents to 75.62 cents U.S.

Health-care concerns ruled the roost in the first hour of trade, as Tilray Inc. sprinted 19 cents, or 9.3%, to $2.24, while Bausch Health Companies gathered 13 cents, or 1.2%, to $10.73.

In real-estate, units of Northwest Health-Care REIT moved forward 20 cents, or 3.2%, to $6.48, while Tricon Capital improved 36 cents, or 3.1%, to $12.04.

Oil prices hiked $1.36 to $71.15 U.S. a barrel.

Gold prices added $7.50 to $1,937 U.S. an ounce.

The TSX Venture Exchange gathered 3.75 points, or 1.4%, to 625.08.

Eight of the 12 TSX subgroups gained ground, with health-care vaulting 2.3%, real-estate stronger 0.9%, and energy rumbling 0.8%.

The four laggards were weighed most by utilities and financials, each pointing downward 0.1%, while industrials suffered 0.04%.
