Stocks Point North in Light Trading

Equities in Canada’s largest centre flourished only slightly in light trading Tuesday, having the spotlight all to themselves as their American cousins celebrated Independence Day

The TSX acquired 49.58 points to close Tuesday at 20,204.87.

Kings of the yard proved to be health-care stocks, such as Tilray Inc., better by 22 cents, or 10.7%, to $2.27, while Chartwell Retirement Residence slid a penny to $9.48.

Energy issues climbed, as International Petroleum grabbed 43 cents, or 4%, to $11.28, while Tamarack Valley Energy took on nine cents or 2.8%, to $3.30.

Among materials, Dundee Precious Metals advanced 58 cents, or 6.6%, to $9.33, while Silvercrest Metals grew 22 cents, or 2.8%, to $7.98.

In the consumer staples field, Northwest Company docked 20 cents to $31.20, while Saputo fell 16 cents, or 0.5%, to $29.52.

In techs, Quarterhill slipped five cents, or 3.4%, to $1.43, while Descartes Group skidded $2.68, or 2.5%, to $103.44.

In industrial issues, Bombardier handed back $1.51, or 2.3%, to $63.80, while Thomson Reuters fell $2.37, or 1.3%, to $176.49.

Oil prices picked up $1.21 to $71.00 U.S. a barrel.

Gold prices added $5.60 to $1,935.10 U.S. an ounce.

ON BAYSTREET

The TSX Venture Exchange gathered 5.26 points to 626.59.

Eight of the 12 TSX subgroups gained ground, with health-care soaring 2.e%, while materials and energy each rumbled 0.9%.

The four laggards were consumer staples, information technology and industrials each slid 0.2%.

ON WALLSTREET

U.S. markets were shuttered for the Fourth of July. They’ll resume business Wednesday.
